WEEK ONE: 3rd – 9th
It’s been well established that this is the digital era; the age where everything we do is in some form shared with the internet. I Am Obsessed With You will be an exploration of the ways we store and distribution personal details of our lives through the various social media platforms available. Curated by Chelsea Hopper, this unique and ever-relevant presentation aims to reiterate the power of images and how it shapes our public and private environments. Don’t forget to RSVP here!
It’s the birthday of your fave live music hub and you can bet that one helluva party will be thrown to celebrate two years of live tunes, fries and alcoholic shakes. Two years means two days of celebration with old pals, special guests, new faces and a street party thrown in for good measure. Featuring: Ah Trees, Ziggy Ramo, NGAIIRE, Feels, DJ sets, and so so so much more! Early bird tix have sold out, so make sure you get a general release ticket ASAP.
WEEK TWO: 10th – 16th
July means: Revelation Perth International Film Festival! From the Canyon Archives, Revelation brings for us a collection of Curt McDowell Films. A San-Francisco-by-way-of-Indiana wild child and openly gay and pansexual filmmaker, McDowell’s films celebrated sex, intimacy and human connection with a touch of the sensual, musical and overly dramatic. Eight of McDowell’s fearless, heartfelt and funny work will be screened on B&W/colour 16mm film.
13th July, 10:30am | Light Scars | Wanneroo Library & Cultural Centre | $5
In this light painting workshop, create artistic self-portraits by scarring your photo with light! Together with a DSLR camera, LED lights and light painting techniques, participants will merge their self-portraits to capture, paint and print artworks of light. Your artworks will be available in prints and will also be displayed at the opening of the Scar exhibition!
Hussle Hussle is a monthly hip-hop/electronic music night that features some of Australia’s rising rhymers, beatmakers and groove lords, every second Friday of the month. July will showcase acts from Freo local Split Figure, Perth-born-Melbourne-living Angie (who will be playing her first ever live set!), LBFRmikey & Dub A, and Chocolate Jesus music curator Benji. Get hustling down to Mojos for a night of fire verses and wavy sounds.
WEEK THREE: 17th – 23rd
In Hybrid, Perth artist Sioux Tempestt examines two contemporary art movements – abstract expressionism and street art – and its hybridity. With acrylic paint and aerosol as her working medium, Tempestt uses layers to relay an abundance of sentiments: vulnerability, sensitivity, strength. Tempestt’s art “resounds true 21st century aestheticism…”
Rising as an internationally recognised street artist in the early 2000s, Perth-raised, New York-based artist Ian Strange continues his investigation on home and suburbia with his latest exhibition Island. With foreclosed suburban houses in Ohio’s Rust Belt region as his focal point, Strange will explore the family home as both a place of refuge and entrapment, through the medium of photography and collected artefacts. Exhibition runs from 22nd July – 16th September.
Let it rain down acid and bad-arse tunes! Where else will you find eleven of your local fave bands, on two stages for a low, low price of 15 buckeroos? No where. The line-up tastes a little bit like this: Hideous Sun Demon, Dream Rimmy, Kitchen People, Demon Days, FLOSSY, Coco Blu and more, more more! Pay up, stay humble and enjoy this banger of a showcase at the interior-confusing venue that is Badlands.
WEEK FOUR: 24th – 30th
Real estate office by day, a fleeting art gallery by night, The Hive’s July showcase features multidisciplinary artist Taylor Denning. “Im/parting” is a one-night-only exhibition which memorialises Denning’s family home as it sits on the real estate market in its most basic form. Through this autobiographical experience, Denning explores our construction and understanding of something we are all familiar with: home.
Remember those easy, breezy days when the best part of the changing of seasons was heading to Sanity to get the latest So Fresh mix? Or getting a thin, square shaped present for your birthday and hoping to the birthday gods that it was the freshest mix CD of the season? Well, get ready to be transported back to ugly dancing in your twelve-year-old bedroom, as Badlands turns into a time machine back to the good ol’ days. Only the freshest of fresh hits to keep your nostalgic-ridden self dancing ‘til the early days!
It’s been a long time coming. This is something we’ve all been eagerly waiting for. Nobody panic but…The boys of POW! Negro are releasing their debut EP Jasmine & Licorice!
